Missing tooth before bridgework

Bridge replacing missing tooth

A two winged Maryland Bridge replacing the missing central incisor

Bridge replaces the missing tooth
Teeth can be lost for many reasons but the gap that remains may require restoration to improve cosmetics, function and prevent adjacent and opposing teeth from drifting.
Options for replacing missing teeth
- A denture
- A conventional bridge
- A Maryland bridge
- A dental implant
Conventional Bridgework
The tooth or teeth either side of the missing tooth are prepared to accept the supporting crown. This 'two tooth' bridge is glued permanently into place using specialised bonding techniques. A superb cosmetic result can be achieved using this strong, long term option
Maryland Bridges
Minimal tooth preparation is required to cement the small wing onto the back of the adjacent supporting tooth.
The example shown below shows a two winged Maryland bridge replacing the missing central incisor.
The wings are also available in a fibre reinforced composite/ tooth coloured material, which offers more pleasing cosmetic results.
What is the advantage over the implant method?
The advantage of this method is clearly the fact that only a little (if any) tooth preparation is needed, though the resultant restoration is not as strong as the ‘conventional’ alternative.
